Jeez Loueez: Better late (night) than never
Interview by Paul Oswell
Award-winning entertainer, Jeez Loueez, is bringing her unconventional comedic style to a live studio audience, reminiscent of legendary late night talk shows. Anarchic antics are bound to ensue as she interviews fascinating locals, introduces ridiculous segments, and showcases the hottest comedians, musicians, and artists from the city. The debut episode features comedian Saya Meads, singer & songwriter Shawan Rice, and cocktail culture queen Deniseea Head. Up All Night caught up with Jeezy as she prepares the show's debut.
Up All Night: Congrats on the new show! Tell us about it. What's the format?
Jeez Loueez: Thank you! I grew up watching old variety shows, games shows, and daytime and late night TV of the 90s and 2000s and that's been my inspiration for this new show. In true late-night fashion I'll be interviewing local musicians, artists, & activists and showcasing comedians and other folks who are making waves in the city and beyond. And Sailem from Hell will be acting as my Ed McMahon, while providing ridiculous commentary & inappropriate sound effects.
Tell us about some of the guests that you have lined up.
Our debut features comedian Saya Meads doing stand up, singer/songwriter Shawan Rice, and Deniseea Head giving us a cocktail demonstration as the resident cocktail culture queen around town. In future shows we'll have a performance from The Jamettes dance krewe, and I would love to speak with local business owners and maybe a couple of politicians or salacious characters!
How are you feeling about 2024?
I'm excited because 2023 sucked! Let's start over and pretend things are really gonna be different this time around!
Describe 2023 in a few words...
BYE BITCH!!!!
Which 2023 shows do you remember most fondly?
I really loved the Queen competition at Teaser Festival, not just because I won, but mostly because I won! Winning is fun! The Black Girl Giggles Comedy Festival was my first comedy fest and I had a BLAST! It was so intimidating and affirming at the same time. It was incredible to have so many Black women comedian showcases. I learned a lot and I got to meet some inspiring artists! And any show where I can bust out my Pina Colada Creampie act is truly special so shout out to Mr. Valdez in CO Springs. That's all I will say about THAT.
What are you looking forward to the most: King Cake season or crawfish season?
Oooh this is hard because I will tear up some crawfish, but I'm gonna go with King Cake because the season is shorter and it revolves around melting from the winter depression into the joy of carnival time. You're saving the smallest bites of Dong Phuong wrapped in cellophane and guarding it with your life. But you're also giving your best friend a piece, because you know you'll come across another one from a friend or kind stranger.
Do you throw yourself into Mardi Gras or are you pretty chill about it?
I absolutely throw myself into Mardi Gras because now is the time to feel ALIVE after a year of surviving! I believe in celebrating yourself, celebrating your friends. and your community, celebrating your city. The vibe is so high and there's a collective sense of merriment that I love being a part of and witnessing.
The Show That Is Tonight premiers January 10th at 9:30pm and runs every second Wednesday monthly at Allways Lounge & Cabaret. Buy tickets here.
