New Orleans' own Remy Dee is back in town for the Yuletide season, and she's bringing her acclaimed burlesque show - A Nightmare Before Christmas - the the AllWays Lounge for two nights this weekend. We caught up with Remy as she touches down in NOLA and prepares to bring some festive spookiness to the stage...
Up All Night: New Orleans: Welcome back to New Orleans! How does it feel to be back?
Remy Dee: It's always wonderful to be back! I'm very fortunate that I'm able to come visit every month or so to see my family and friends, and to work some gigs. Every time I come back, it's like I never left.
Tell us about the acts you’ve got lined up for the show...
Each act will be performed by a character from The Nightmare Before Christmas. We're using a mixture of songs from the movie (including covers) and some other creative shenanigans the performers have come up with.
How are you feeling about 2024?
I'm STOKED for 2024! Since I've started producing again, I'm excited about all the show ideas I have rattling around in my brain.
Sum up your 2023 for us in a few words.
2023 was my first full year in Nashville. I've had some challenges, but I feel more settled and more comfortable with myself.
What were some of the funnest shows you did in the last year?
Oh my word (pun intended), the Booklover's Burlesque Festival in Portland was probably my favorite. But I'm a GIANT literature nerd so I'm very biased. All of Trixie Minx's shows are a good time, and I love performing with the Society of Sin.
What do you look forward to the most: King Cake season or crawfish season?
Don't you DARE make me choose! I'm looking forward to both!
What’s the weirdest/funniest difference between New Orleans and Nashville?
Well my tires are definitely happier in Nashville. But I do miss the food and the warmth of New Orleans. I will always be a delicate swamp flower.
Any favorite Christmas/New Year, traditions or parties?
My favorite New Year's Eve tradition is NOT WORKING. My partner and I either stay in or we get a fun hotel room somewhere and just STAY PUT. I've tried working on New Year's Eve a few times and it's too stressful for me. The idea of having to drive ANYwhere that night makes me anxious.
Do you have a song you're dying to create an act for?
"Wrong" by MAX featuring Lil Uzi Vert.
You have an unlimited budget. Who’s your dream last minute addition to the cast for the show?
Perle Noire and Elvira: Mistress of the Dark!
